In the UK Egger operates on three sites – Hexham, Northumberland; Barony, Ayrshire, Scotland; Leeds, West Yorkshire.
The Hexham site is home to Egger (UK) Ltd, Egger Floor Products Ltd, Egger Forestry Products Ltd, and Campact Ltd.
Egger UK runs the chipboard production and sales facility. Egger Forestry Products deals with purchase of timber raw materials, and management, marketing and harvesting of UK woodlands. Campact makes formaldehyde-based resins and other related chemicals used in chipboard manufacture. The role of Egger Floor Products is, well, floor products. Another company Weyroc Limited is dormant.
The Leeds site comprises a single company Egger Timberpak, which supplies recycled wood to Hexham as a raw material and fuel.
The Barony site houses Egger (Barony) Ltd, which is a second chipboard production plant. A separate company Egger (Ayrshire) Ltd holds land.
HISTORY
Egger purchased the Hexham site in the early 1980s – just as the factory was about to close. The original plant was created by Weyroc Limited in the 1960s to process trees from Kielder Forest (which begins some 7 miles to the North West of Hexham) into chipboard. The resulting chipboard became synonymous with the company name, rather as photocopying used to be identified with Xerox, but later the Weyroc company fell on hard times.
Since 1984 Egger have installed new plant and additional activities at Hexham such as the construction of the in-house resin production facility operated as Campact Ltd. (1988). Egger opened a major expansion and re-equipment of the Hexham site in 2007, but staff employed remained at the same level: 450. A further major expansion at Hexham to create a very large chipboard-processing plant and 15-45 jobs received conditional planning permission in July 2009.
In 2007 the Barony site employed around 100 people.
